The Stanley Foundation's 41st United Nations Issues Conference, The United Nations and the G-20: Ensuring Complementary Efforts, will bring together key UN and national government representatives and officials to discuss the future shape of multilateral cooperation—particularly relationships among intergovernmental forums.
In little more than a year, the G-20 has emerged as a vital summit-level forum for leaders to discuss international economic policy. This development raises fundamental questions about the role of the "G groups," given the informal nature, alongside formal treaty-based institutions such as the United Nations. Our conference discussion will look for ways to harmonize the deliberations and actions of these two crucial forums, encouraging collaboration and synergy so that, together, they help build a more peaceful and prosperous world.
